# Aspect MCP

> Connect an AI assistant to Aspect to find footage, read transcripts, organize media, and prepare work for your editor.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets an AI assistant call tools in another application. Aspect's hosted MCP server gives your assistant access to the media and projects you can use in Aspect.

Connect this **Streamable HTTP** endpoint:

```text theme={null}
https://api.aspect.inc/mcp
```

Use it to find shots, read transcripts and document text, organize selects, work with canvases, and manage review. The [tool reference](/docs/mcp/tools) lists the available calls.

## Connect your assistant

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Claude">
    In Claude, open **Settings → Connectors**, add a custom connector, and enter `https://api.aspect.inc/mcp`. Connect it and sign in to Aspect when prompted. Your plan or workspace must allow custom connectors.

    This is a remote connector. It is separate from a local desktop extension such as the DaVinci Resolve MCP.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Codex">
    Add the server and sign in:

    ```bash theme={null}
    codex mcp add aspect --url https://api.aspect.inc/mcp
    codex mcp login aspect
    codex mcp list
    ```

    Start a new session or restart the connection, then ask the assistant to list the Aspect workspaces available to you. See [OpenAI's MCP setup guide](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/extend/mcp).
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="ChatGPT desktop">
    Open **Settings → MCP servers → Add server**. Name it `aspect`, choose **Streamable HTTP**, and enter `https://api.aspect.inc/mcp`. Save, restart the connection, and authenticate with Aspect.

    Use a conversation with access to that local host's MCP tools. ChatGPT web does not read local MCP configuration. For web conversations, use a remote MCP-backed plugin or your workspace's supported connector setup. See [OpenAI's MCP guide](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/extend/mcp) for current availability.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Cursor and other clients">
    Add a remote Streamable HTTP server in your client's MCP settings. For clients using an `mcpServers` JSON configuration:

    ```json theme={null}
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "aspect": {
          "url": "https://api.aspect.inc/mcp"
        }
      }
    }
    ```

    Merge this entry with any existing servers. Complete the Aspect sign-in when your client prompts you. The configuration format varies by client.
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

## Authentication and permissions

**OAuth** opens an Aspect sign-in flow and is the recommended option for clients that support it. For a client that accepts explicit headers, you can use an Aspect API key as an `Authorization: Bearer` token instead. Create a key using the [API overview](/docs/api-reference/index) and keep it in your client's secret or environment configuration.

Every tool call follows the signed-in user's permissions. A connection does not grant access to another workspace or override a project's restrictions. The local CLI has a separate authentication state; check `aspect auth status --json` before combining it with MCP.

<Tip>
  Aspect also provides connection instructions in **Settings → Aspect Agent & MCP**. Start with a read-only request: “List the Aspect workspaces and projects I can access.”
</Tip>

## Choose the right tool for the work

| Task | Use |
| - | - |
| Find footage and read scene descriptions, transcripts, or review comments | Aspect MCP |
| Organize files, collections, metadata, and canvases | Aspect MCP |
| Transfer media, mount a project, or pin files on this computer | Aspect CLI |
| Edit a timeline, adjust a grade, or render from an editing application | That editor's integration, such as Blackmagic's Resolve MCP |

Aspect is not a video editor. It provides the media, context, and file access that let an agent work effectively in an editor.
