      answer: "Aspect gives editors on Mac and Windows a shared media drive, with footage search and browser review built into the same platform. Frame.io Drive adds desktop access to Frame.io through Suite Studios' streaming technology. Dropbox and Blackmagic Cloud work with synchronized local files. Parsec lets remote editors use the computers and storage already installed at a facility."

    {
      question: "Can Frame.io replace LucidLink for shared storage?",
      answer: "Frame.io now offers Mounted Storage through its Drive desktop app, so it can be evaluated for direct editing from cloud media. Standard Storage and Mounted Storage have separate allocations, which makes capacity planning important. Confirm the required mounted capacity, application behavior, permissions, and network performance before moving an active production."
    },
    {
      question: "Is Dropbox the same kind of storage as LucidLink?",
      answer: "No. Dropbox documents that opening an online-only file downloads it and requires enough local space for that file. LucidLink streams requested file data through a mounted filespace. Dropbox can work well for selected proxies, exports, and files synchronized before a session, but that workflow has different transfer and disk requirements from on-demand mounted storage."
    },
    {
      question: "Can I edit offline with a LucidLink alternative?",
      answer: "Offline access depends on the product and on having the necessary media fully stored locally. Aspect supports pinning complete files and folders, but pinning must finish before disconnecting, and pinning a project file does not include its referenced media. Dropbox also supports files made available offline. Frame.io's Mounted Storage documentation describes an active connection as required, so do not assume that a populated streaming cache guarantees offline access."

    {
      question: "Does shared cloud storage prevent editors from overwriting projects?",
      answer: "Shared media access and editing-project collaboration are separate requirements. LucidLink documents app-aware file locking, but protection must still be checked for the application and workflow in use. With Aspect, Premiere Productions or Team Projects supplies the relevant project collaboration behavior. DaVinci Resolve similarly supplies its own collaboration and locking tools; a common media location alone is not proof that simultaneous project editing is safe."
    },
    {
      question: "What should be included when comparing total cost?",
      answer: "Include paid members, the capacity that must remain available for editing, storage growth, local disks, and any review or search tools you'll retain. Check whether streaming access has a separate capacity allowance and whether features require a higher plan. For remote workstations, also include the host computers or cloud compute, editing licenses, maintenance, and commercial remote-access licensing."

If your team is replacing LucidLink but wants to keep working from a shared drive, Aspect and Frame.io Drive provide that access. Dropbox and Blackmagic Cloud synchronize files to each editor's storage, while Parsec lets the editor control a remote workstation where the files and editing software stay.

Here's how each option handles footage search, freelancer access, and offline work, and how storage costs change as your library grows.

## Choose the storage approach before choosing a product

**Mounted cloud storage** lets an editor run Premiere Pro, Resolve, or another application locally while opening cloud files through a drive. The application requests file data, and a local cache retains recently accessed content. LucidLink, Aspect, and Frame.io Mounted Storage fit this approach. A file can become usable before a complete download, but playback still depends on the media, application, cache, and connection.

**File synchronization** places selected media on each workstation before or during the workflow. Dropbox and Blackmagic Cloud can support this model. It's useful when a defined proxy package or project folder fits locally and the team can allow time for transfers. Online-only placeholders make browsing convenient; they don't automatically mean a product streams only the portion of a file an editor needs.

**Remote workstation access** leaves the editing application and media at a facility or cloud workstation. Parsec carries the desktop session to the editor. This can preserve an established storage setup, although responsiveness now depends on the remote session as well as the host computer.

| Option | Where editing happens | What it provides |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Aspect | Local Mac or Windows workstation using mounted cloud media | Media search, editing access, and browser review built together |
| Frame.io Drive | Local Mac or Windows workstation using Mounted Storage | Bring desktop access into an existing Frame.io workflow |
| Dropbox | Local workstation using synchronized files | Distribute manageable working folders and deliverables |
| Blackmagic Cloud | Local Resolve workstation using synchronized media | Coordinate Resolve projects and their media |
| Parsec | Remote workstation | Keep existing hardware and media together |

## When LucidLink remains the right choice

[LucidLink's current platform](https://www.lucidlink.com/product) provides an on-demand shared filespace, local caching, file pinning, and app-aware file locking, with dedicated support identified for Premiere Pro and Windows. It also documents web and mobile access, guest links, snapshots, and TeamCache for an on-site shared cache. An evaluation based on the assumption that LucidLink is only a desktop drive will miss capabilities it now offers.

Keeping LucidLink is reasonable when editors already have reliable media access and producers are satisfied with their separate review and asset-management tools. Moving a working library has a cost in validation, permissions, and project relinking. List the uploads, searches, and handoffs that slow the team down, then repeat those tasks in the replacement before moving the library.

Check your actual contract before comparing costs. [LucidLink's pricing page](https://www.lucidlink.com/pricing) distinguishes current member-based plans with pooled storage from existing Classic subscriptions. It also lists TeamCache and bring-your-own-storage options under Enterprise, so those capabilities should be compared at the appropriate plan level.

## Five LucidLink alternatives for video teams

### 1. Aspect: mounted media with search and review

Aspect gives editors, producers, and reviewers access to the same media in the form each person needs. Editors open originals through a [shared drive](https://aspect.inc/features/instant-access), producers search the footage, and clients leave feedback in the [browser viewer](https://aspect.inc/docs/review-and-approve/viewer-and-review). File streaming, search, and review were built together as one product, so a shot found in the library can go straight into the editor's existing project.

The [desktop app for macOS and Windows](https://aspect.inc/docs/apps/desktop) presents projects in Finder or File Explorer. Aspect [streams the parts of a file your application requests](https://aspect.inc/docs/instant-access/overview) and keeps recently accessed data in a local cache. Pin a file or folder when you want the complete contents available offline.

Aspect's [AI Search](https://aspect.inc/docs/asset-intelligence/ai-search) can locate visual content and spoken moments after indexing finishes, then reveal the original through **Open in mount**. That connection is useful for a producer finding a shot that an editor must immediately reuse. Project collaboration still needs its own configuration: the [Premiere workflow](https://aspect.inc/docs/workflows/premiere-pro) describes how Productions or Team Projects works alongside shared media.

<DidYouKnow href="https://aspect.inc/docs/asset-intelligence/ai-search">
Aspect lets a producer search for a visual moment or spoken topic, inspect the matching time range, and reveal the original file through Open in mount. The producer can give the editor that source file and its time range without downloading a separate copy or searching through the camera folders again.

### 2. Frame.io Drive: mounted storage for a Frame.io workflow

[Frame.io Drive](https://frame.io/drive) mounts projects on macOS and Windows using [streaming technology supplied by Suite Studios](https://blog.suitestudios.io/article/suite-studios-frame-io-drive-bringing-file-streaming-to-creative-teams-everywhere). That technology is embedded in Drive, extending Frame.io's review platform into desktop file access. Aspect built its own file streaming alongside its search and review tools; Frame.io added this capability through the Suite partnership.

There are two important purchasing distinctions. [Mounted Storage](https://frame.io/features/mounted-storage) is separate from Standard Storage, and the [pricing page](https://frame.io/pricing) gives each plan its own mounted allocation. A large general storage allowance doesn't establish that the entire library can be mounted within the base subscription. Its Mounted Storage FAQ also describes an active internet connection as required, so cached content should not be assumed to provide a guaranteed offline workflow.

### 3. Dropbox: synchronized working folders

If you usually send editors a selected set of footage, Dropbox can handle that handoff. You can synchronize an approved proxy package before the session and use shared folders for graphics and deliveries. Editors will need enough local storage for the files they use.

The distinction matters for large camera files. [Dropbox's online-only documentation](https://help.dropbox.com/sync/make-files-online-only) says that opening an online-only file downloads it and requires enough local disk space. Plan for that transfer before the edit, then verify that every required file is available offline. Don't use the presence of a filename in Finder as proof that the media is ready.

Dropbox also offers collaboration features beyond sync. Its [plan comparison](https://www.dropbox.com/plans) lists file locking, video tools, and Dropbox Replay, with limits that vary by offering. Include the review capacity and controls you actually need in the comparison. For a library that substantially exceeds each editor's disk, managing selected local copies becomes an ongoing production responsibility.

### 4. Blackmagic Cloud: Resolve project collaboration with media sync

If your editors work in DaVinci Resolve, Blackmagic Cloud keeps the shared project within the software they already use. [Its collaboration workflow](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/collaboration) uses cloud project libraries for the edit and synchronizes media to local disks or network storage. Resolve manages bin and timeline locking and the acceptance of changes.

That arrangement can work well for a distributed edit using local proxies. Blackmagic Proxy Generator can create proxies in watched folders, and Resolve can link them to their originals. The same product family also offers Presentations for review, with comments and shared markers connected to Resolve.

The tradeoff is local media planning. Agree on which machines need proxies, which need originals for finishing, and who verifies that transfers have completed. A shared project library doesn't itself make its referenced footage available. This is most compelling when Resolve is the center of the workflow; a facility using several editing applications should evaluate its wider media-access needs separately.

### 5. Parsec: keep the workstation beside the media

[Parsec for Teams](https://parsec.app/teams) connects editors to existing hardware and supports managed computers, access controls, and shared sessions. It is useful when a facility already has capable workstations and storage, and the immediate problem is allowing editors to work away from the building. The media and editing application remain on the host; the editor receives an interactive desktop stream.

This changes the scope of the replacement. Parsec doesn't supply the shared media library itself, so the existing storage, backups, and application licenses still need to be maintained. Test the session with the actual monitors, audio workflow, and network conditions that matter to the production. A responsive timeline on the host does not establish that remote monitoring meets a finishing requirement.

[Parsec's current licensing](https://parsec.app/pricing) requires Teams or Enterprise for commercial use. Include that license, host availability, hardware or cloud-compute costs, and any guest-access charges in the estimate.

## Compare costs with one realistic library

Start with each subscription and its included capacity, then compare storage in the same units. Prices are in USD before tax, with annual commitments labeled separately.

| Product and plan | Price and billing | Storage or other costs to include |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Aspect Pro](https://aspect.inc/pricing) | Starts at **$30/seat/month** with monthly billing. Or **$25.50/seat/month** with annual billing. | Includes 500 GB per seat. Lower storage rates are available for larger team requirements. |
| [LucidLink Business](https://www.lucidlink.com/pricing) | **$32/member/month** on monthly billing, or **$27/member/month** with annual billing. | 400 GB included per member, pooled across the workspace. Additional storage is billed after the shared allowance is used. |
| [Frame.io Team](https://frame.io/pricing) | **$25/member/month** on monthly billing, or **$22/member/month** paid as $264/member/year. | 500 GB of Mounted Storage; the trial has 250 GB. Standard storage has a separate allowance. Additional mounted capacity needs its own price. |
| [Dropbox Standard](https://www.dropbox.com/plans) | **$15/user/month, billed yearly**. Starts with one user. | Starts at 3 TB for the team. Include local drives and any paid review add-on in the budget. |
| [Blackmagic Cloud](https://help.cloud.blackmagicdesign.com/settings/manage-services/) | **$5/month per hosted project library**. Media storage is billed separately. | Storage and project-library hosting are separate services. Editors also need local media storage; paid Resolve Studio licenses are separate from these cloud charges. |
| [Parsec Teams](https://parsec.app/pricing) | **$35/user/month** on monthly billing, or **$30/user/month** paid annually. | Remote-access licensing. Host workstations and media storage are separate. Guest Access costs **$25 per invitation** for up to five days. |

Blackmagic Cloud media storage costs [**$15/TB/month**](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/media/release/20241126-01), in addition to project-library hosting. Its Cloud guide's 50 TB example totals $750/month for storage. Parsec's annual Teams rate is $360 per user for the year. Dropbox's displayed $15 rate also requires yearly billing, so neither should be treated as a month-to-month subscription at that price.

### Compare the cost per included TB

The table below divides one paid seat's monthly price by the mounted storage included with that plan, using 1 TB = 1,000 GB. This gives you the same unit for each service; it doesn't mean each vendor sells a standalone 1 TB plan at that price.

| Plan | Cost per included TB per month | Calculation using monthly billing |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Aspect Pro](https://aspect.inc/pricing) | **$60/TB/month** | $30 per seat divided by 0.5 TB included per seat. Larger team storage volumes have lower rates. |
| [LucidLink Business](https://www.lucidlink.com/pricing) | **$80/TB/month** | $32 per member divided by 0.4 TB included per member. |
| [Frame.io Team](https://frame.io/pricing) | **$50/TB/month** for the included mounted allowance | One $25 member subscription divided by 0.5 TB of Mounted Storage per workspace. |

Aspect and LucidLink add storage with each paid seat. Frame.io's mounted allowance is shared by the workspace, so additional members increase its cost per included TB. Frame.io quotes extra mounted capacity separately. LucidLink's additional storage also costs **$80/TB/month**, converted from $8 per 100 GB; that charge applies only after the pooled allowance is used.

### Price a 10 TB production library

Suppose eight editors and two producers work with a 10 TB library, with outside clients joining for review. About 2 TB is in use during a typical week.

First decide whether editors must be able to open all 10 TB without an administrative change, or whether someone can manage a smaller working set. Then identify which producers need paid membership and which reviewers can use external links. Those decisions determine the capacity and seat count to quote.

For eight paid members on monthly billing, LucidLink Business costs $256 and includes 3.2 TB. The remaining 6.8 TB costs $544 at $8 per 100 GB, making the total **$800/month** if usage stays at 10 TB. Add any other paid users required by the access arrangement you choose.

At Aspect's $60/TB monthly storage equivalent, 10 TB corresponds to **$600/month before volume pricing**. [Book a demo with the Aspect team](https://aspect.inc/book-a-demo/) to discuss the lower rate available for your team's storage requirements and how the editors and producers will use the library.

Frame.io Team lists 500 GB of Mounted Storage, separately from its general storage allowance. Neither the 2 TB working set nor the full 10 TB library fits that allocation, so the quote needs to include additional mounted capacity.

For Dropbox or Blackmagic Cloud, include the disks your editors need and the time they spend downloading selected media. For Parsec, add the host workstations and their ongoing operation. Across every option, include retained review subscriptions, search tools, migration effort, and support. A lower storage invoice only reduces overall cost if the rest of the workflow remains workable.

<DidYouKnow href="https://aspect.inc/docs/instant-access/pin-files">
Aspect can pin complete files and folders so the selected media remains available locally after pinning finishes. When planning an offline edit, include the project file and every referenced video, audio, graphic, and proxy you need, because pinning the project file alone doesn't download its dependencies.
</DidYouKnow>

## Run a pilot that ends with a finished handoff

Choose a project that reflects your weekly workflow, including the camera originals, proxies, audio, graphics, and timelines your editors normally use. Keep the existing production available while you try the replacement, and use the same project in each service so you can compare the results.

1. **Open unfamiliar media.** Record the delay before a clip becomes usable with an empty cache, then repeat after caching or synchronization. Include scrubbing and the number of simultaneous streams your normal timeline uses.
2. **Exercise collaboration.** Have two editors open the intended project arrangement, save changes, and hand ownership back. Check the editing application's locking or change-sharing behavior and confirm that media paths stay valid.
3. **Complete the producer's task.** Find an older shot, identify the right original, and get it into the edit. Then share a revised cut and confirm that feedback remains attached to the intended version.
4. **Test the expected interruption.** Prepare for an offline session where supported, or reconnect after a network interruption. Verify access and completed uploads before another person takes over.
5. **Reconcile the quote.** Confirm seats, mounted capacity, storage growth, required add-ons, and retained tools against what the pilot actually used.

Aspect brings the shared drive, footage library, and review process into one product. Frame.io Drive extends an existing Frame.io workflow through Suite's streaming technology. Dropbox and Blackmagic Cloud work when editors can prepare local media, while Parsec keeps the edit on the facility's machines. Compare the time spent finding files, preparing local copies, and handing off revisions before deciding whether to replace your current setup.
